Capped broadband

So, how exactly do ISPs enforce a cap on your monthly downloads ?
Is there any way to bypass this ?

Yeah, but I was looking at switching to Sky for TV, Phone and Broadband (They do 16mb) for less than I'm paying with Telewest.
However, I can save a further £10 monthly if I go for their 40gb capped broadband service.

So was wondering if ISPs actually do enforce the download cap or if it was just all talk.
How do they do it (assuming they can) ?

No, I'm leaning more towards asking if they actually do enforce it to the letter.
Is a 40gb limit literally 40gb enforced by some mad robot software, or do they somehow cut you off sometime later when a 'human' decides to press the button ?

Firstly they send you nice letters asking you to stop downloading so much (porn), then they send you some shitty letters asking you to stop downloading so much (porn) then they throttle your cable so you get a really shitty download speed, then if you continue to abuse this they cut you off.

Get an uncapped service if your intaweb gaming itll use bandwidth so got to take that into account, after all how else do you fill your time villa?

I'll probably move over to Sky's 16mb uncapped broadband etc in the next few days.
Though, after speaking to BT, it appears I probably won't get anywhere near 16mb down speed.

Whenever an ISP says "Up to 8Mb" or whatever, it's mostly nothing to do with the ISP themselves as to what speed you'll get - it's almost all down to signal quality between you and your local exchange.

They just say "up to" so that they can say things like 8Mb and sell it to more people.

If your with telewest, i assume you got the letter how Virgin have just bought them over, if its just the Sky TV you want fine, but, if your not too bothered, and are only going with it for the package deal, maybe wait too see what Virgins new deals will be?

NTL trial run atm, but they should be rolling it out by the end of the year
As much as people put NTL down, my service from them has been top notch

I pay £25 a month for uncapped 4mb downspeed (128kb up).
No major issues with the current service other than blatant lack of value for money.

we (me n housemates) pay 40 for 16mb down/unlimited (plus phone line with free eve/weekend calls + line rental), again NTl and no probs whatsoeva, fast and reliable
