The Recommend an Amp and Speakers Thread

Post by Zim Zum »

So I've been spending far too much money on equipping myself with new technology, which so far amounts to £900 for a 32inch HD LCD television and 400 euros on an Xbox premium to take advantage of said TV.

Naturally I will be buying an HD upscaler DVD player, thus far the Samsung 850 looks perfect as it's fairly cheap and supports all the necessary formats, as well as having an HDMI connection that is HDCP compliant. I dont want to spend more than then £70 that costs because at the moment true HD DVD players are not available in the UK, and I will inevitably have to upgrade again at the end of the year.

At the moment I do not have an amplifier or decent speaker set up, and that's going to be my next over the top purchase. I know some of you guys like to spend lots of money on this kind of shit and so was hoping you could recommend something to me.

Im very vain and so I want to get an amp and speakers that look sexy as well as do a good job, although Im not prepared to spend an insane amount of money doing it. Id like to stay below £500 if possible. Id like an amp with plenty of inputs, would be nice if it had at least a couple of optical inputs, so I can plug my Xbox, TV and DVD player into it seperately with optical cables rather than have all audio going through the TV and into the amp. Obviously Ill want the full set of other inputs like all normal amps have, so I can add more components at a later date.

Naturally it must be at least a DD 5.1 system. DTS would be a big bonus too.

This stuff is all going into a dedicated loung so I want to go for floor standing full size speakers for the front and rear, not shitty little wall mounted ones.

So any ideas? Im about to spend half the night looking myself.

Oh and anyone who is about to suggest LG, Goodmans or any cheap plasticy looking japanese shit (ie Sony, Yamaha etc is ok) is banned from the thread!

Ok already realised £500 is waaayy too optimistic :(

Found the perfect amp though:

http://www.avland.co.uk/yamaha/dspax757/dspax757.htm

Normally £500 but £350 here and has everything I want and more.

I think what I'll do is just buy a decent set of front floor standing speakers first and work from there as money allows, I'll probably be forced to go the wall mounting route for the rears though.

Wish I had the money for a pair of B&W Nautilus speakers though :(

my first decent seperates setup was a cambridge audio amp and B&W 601s2 speakers, that was pretty much ont he nose of 500 quid and an awesome setup.

I hear the same setup today is still as good with the modern day equivalents
