Machine rebooted itself last night.
now cant get back into the computer. it loads up the desktop but does'nt actually go into windows. (the desktop pic is there but no icons) Ctrl+alt+del shows Explorer.exe is not running

any ideas on how to get it back up and running?

ctrl + alt + del
depending on which windows version go to taskmanager and then "new" and write there explorer im not good at explaining it but anyway hope it helps

Sounds to me like explorer got corrupted by the sudden restart.
You want to reboot but interrupt it and get a dos prompt (Or use a boot disk)
Run system restore and restore it to a point before the RESTART OF DOOM.

I forget the exact way of interrupting XP, it's either F8 or F12, failing that half way through the boot up just reset and it'll present you with the option next time.
