i lost to mina (nina? lina? bina i really dont have the faintest idea) 1v1 earlier :<
the only logical explaination i can come up with is a dragon flamestriked me because in a exp fs light combo i know for a fact i interupted the fs and fairly sure on the exp to
mayby im just getting slow and mis timed completely
or mayby its true
I SUCK
i really need more 1v1 practice (mayby ill make a thread about me winning a 3v1 4 times in a row yet failing to kill 1v1 yesterday)
As i said, we had about 15 duels between the three of us, and only two of them were Special Duels, and that is because i asked for them, in the field i use specials, and i wanted to try a quick combo kill, im sure Winder will point out our first duel lasted roughly 20 seconds, where as the other was some LOVELY healing and no specials that lasted..10mins before i finally pulled some lightnings out of my bottom ^^
I think thats the difference Angus, EU duels are all about timing and using the right spell at the right time, DF duels are more akin to field fights, thus allow specials.
I've never EVER dueled anyone, played 100% dex until very recently, so i'm not really any sort of authority. However this does give me a good view point as an outsider who often watches others duel.
As far as i can see there are +'s and -'s for both styles, and both have their place in the dueling arena, no one is better than the other, becaus ethye are both designed for different circumstance's.
One the one hand you have the "special" crowd. These seem to be the kind of people who crave 1v1 in the field and may or may only have pvp'd since AoS and the introduction of the special move in this form. For one they don't know any different since they never played in the time of P16 and before, and the other is these are the people who have adapted the most to the AoS system of play and have come to embrace these moves into their style and so are more comfortable with it since they use it all the time.
On the other side of the fence you have the "true duel" crowd. These shun special moves and most things introduced with AoS. The main reason being the huge dueling scene that existed on EU way back in P16 and before. Many an evening i can remember sitting on the roof of the Acient Oak Tower watching the likes of Ky Wild, Feersum and all that crowd ( apoologies to DF players as you won't know of these people most likely ) constantly fighting, killing, ressing and fighting again for hours on end, and often the difference between a win or a loss would simply be down to a mistimed spell or poor choice.
I've been witness to some duels between EU veterans and older Df residents, and i think most of the DF crew have expressed interest in learning the EU way, especially as this would enable them to compete on our terms and thus prove their skill if they won, without fear of being called lame cos of their style.
Both systems have merit, and both have their place. I don't think there are may I-C players, or from other guilds, who can claim they would never use a special move on the field, so why is it so bad when someone wants to duel using that system of play? The same applies the other way round, why not agree to a "no special" duel? Even if you know you'll loose you may learn something, and i know for a fact you'll gain respect for just trying rather than saying no without reason. Most of I-C will certainly agree to a duel WITH specials if the other side would agree the other way round.
I don't really know what spurned me to write all this TBh, but i hope some of what i've said makes some sort of sense. As i said at the start, i'm no dueler, and would never claim to be, these are just my observations of things recently.
I duel with specials and without, im not very good at it but im certainly improving. I even try and fight 2v1 now and then, just need to get to a place less cramped than for instance mid spawn deciet or terra. Im prolly what you lot would call an aos "superstar" even tho im not very good, ive done most of my pvp'ing in AoS.. i did some pk'ing and pvp'ing pre aos, but mostly just to learn and mostly just influenced by my guild at that time NbN..
anyway, i'll fight 2v1 most of the time, but sometimes i cba.
mainly because i know im gonna be drylooted, not ressed and just completely overlooked..
and i fight duels whatever way suits my opponent, even tho i know im gonna loose, atleast i might learn something and improve my skills.
Why don't they go on really empty shards like like japanese or korean ones?

yeah i disarm too, but will most likely be hit by bleed at that time and im not much of a dueller.. if i knew more efective combos id win this game np.
Buster I totally agree, I wouldent say i rely on special moves in one vs one duels, dont get me wrong, vs a dexxer i LOVE disarm from my Fork etc, but im confident i could fight almost any one vs one and with no specials and stand a good chance.
But the problem comes with my template, ive choosen to raise fence to 110 for the use of special moves, im a pker, not a dueler, and i beleive the ablitly to bleed, para or dismount gives me a good tactical advantage over anyone in the field, so when it comes to duels im overly used to just pressing F10 or F11 to enable a special.
Yet I am currently working on a Wrestle/Mage to counter this problem, who i shall use for champing/dueling, he wont be as good as Shantala, due to i cba raising scribe or buying scrolls, but it will be a welcome addition to my pvp ability.
