Car insurence
My girlfriend's rear window shattered this morning, when she closed her door to go to work this morning. Obviously she wasn't able to drive it, so has had to take the morning off work to try and get it sorted.... anyway.
She'll need to get her car picked up etc, but I'm sure there is some kind of charge we have to pay before insurence will cover it? Also, if there is a fee, can we claim it back - assuming her insurence covers that?
...and I have to pay for it since her purse got stolen on saturday night and her new bank cards haven't arrived... rubbish :<
Cheers

a] Most car insurence has what you call an exess, this means you pay the first xxx of any claim. Therefore if her exess is between £250-£500 which is pretty normal then you will not be able to claim as the total damage would be less than or equal to this.
b] for something so little its not even worth claiming as it would bump your premiums up by quite alot.

It might work out better for you to just pay for it outright depending how much it is? If you claim on insurance you'll have to pay excess, I'm not sure exactly cause I don't have a car, but claiming always makes your premiums raise anyway. Worth considering just paying for a repair rather than going on insurance anyway.
Down with Scotland
There was still some (1/5th) of the window there, and I couldn't exactly punch it out, there wasn't an easy way to completely remove it. Plus I'm not sure if it's legal to drive without it, especially when she has to go out of town etc.....and it was freeeeeeeezing in the early hours of this morning

I think (not 100% sure though) that you could cover it with like plastic, and then go driving with it np.
Keep in mind that there are lots of cars with limited/no vision in the rear-view mirror. (Campervan or similar on the back would also remove that vision)
And should you infact get stopped by the rozzers, i think you just have to tell them that it has infact only recently happened, and that you are just about to get it fixed.
That being said, there are obvious reasons why you dont want to be driving around like that. But this way, you wont have to pay to get it hauled to the shop or w/e.

Most car insurance policies have window cover which does not impact your annual premium.
You just pay the excess (as Morthfag already said) which can be as little as £50 depending on your policy.
A lot of insurance companies use window repair/replacement firms that will even drive to your home/work for no extra cost (other than the excess).
For example, I had a small scratch on my windscreen so I phoned my insurance company and got it replaced for £75 excess - the real cost would have been probably something like £450 or more. My annual premium does not go up. This is how it is for most insurance policies.

Signatures broken since 2009...
Only a windscreen is legally required. If you make the rear window safe in its present condition then you can drive as it is.
And yeah you didnt say what level of cover she has, fully comp should pay for it, otherwise you'll have to call out someone like autoglass and stump the bill.

Yeah I wasn't know what type of insuarnce she had. It's cool getting it all sorted tommorrow now. I don't fancy removing all the glass, nor does she particularly want to drive with no back window.Zim Zum wrote:Only a windscreen is legally required. Cheers though, will have to have a proper look @ her insurance tonight and see where she stand's.
Villa is almost entirely right.
First step is to check her policy booklet to find out whether she has a recommended repairer for windowglass. If you can find out, give them a call.
Otherwise, call the your claims hotline and ask one of the advisers who your recommended repairer is. Usually you pay the excess straight to them and they will bill your insurance company. DON'T go ahead and get it done outright as some companies have a limit on what they will pay a non-selected repairer.
Don't get it done without an estimate (if you decide to deal yourself) as certain windowglass is very expensive if replaced on a like-for-like basis. They may inflate costs & plan to claim it back from your insurer, which can leave you fucked if you've had the work done in conflict with your policy limitations.
And Villa is right most of the time windscreen claims don't affect the premium (although your insurer's underwriters might start to penalize you if you have them done too frequently). Best thing to do really is to give the company a call and ask what cover you have before taking any action. Any decent windowglass company will come out and repair it or will organize a makeshift repair until they can.
