Tipping

Post by Villa »

I put it to you that tipping is generally playing into the hands of tight-fisted employers who can maximise their profits by paying artifically low salaries, and expect the public to use their morals to make up the difference.

I agree.

Used to be extra nice to customers even ones I thought were knobs, to make more tips. Does make it worth it though, tips don't get taxed, only downside is, they are never guarenteed.

Tipping is many things. It is a quantifiable appreciation of a service rendered, like bringing a bottle of wine to a friend who has you over for dinner. It is a social lubricant (lol). It is an expression of affluence, and carries an unspoken implication of social superiority, which, to be fair, so does having somebody bring you your food. So perhaps it offers a balance to the equation, allaying guilt complexes, reminding the recipient that they are not a slave, that there is a degree of equality in the transaction.

It does also play into the hands of tight-fisted employers.

By the way my compendium of various overanalyses is out next month. And I'm plugging it.

Eloquently stated my son.
However, the various definitions not withstanding; is it not fair to say that by continuing to give gratuities one is indirectly encouraging greedy employers to carry on taking advantage of the situation ?
That is; we the customers are responsible for the continuation of an archaic and possibly unnecessary practice ?

If everyone didn't tip, the only people that lose out are the staff involved. Most of these companies are cunts anyway and know that if one quits, another will require a job just as quick, so they lose absolutely ziltch by you not tipping.

I agree it shouldn't be compulsory to tip but it's not like the companies will turn round and say, oh noone tips anymore, lets raise the wages by 0.50/hour.

A ton of companies take a portion of peoples tips anyway and each place has it's own seperate way of splitting tips.

Calix/Noxin you made giggle in my open plan office. Now they deffintly will think i'm a homosexual. And they'll be half right i guess.

Tipping is fucking gay.

It's your job, why should you be tipped extra for it? I don't get a fucking tip for doing my job.

Lol i just thought of a joke:

A black man applies for a job at X company (choose one for the sake of the joke). When the interview was over, the interviewer said "we'd like to hire you, but we pay our wages in pounds sterling, is this ok?" The black man said "yes, of course. why?" and the interviewer said "we thought you might want peanuts we weren't sure".

HAHAHAH.

If you get paid shit wage, then get a better job. If you work as a monkey, expect peanuts..

I'm already paying for the expensive (happy) meal. Why should i have to pay extra on top of that. Tipping is a hidden extra which is gay. Japan is best, theres no tipping there. America is worst, you're expected to tip people for doing what they're meant to do.. wtf is that shit about.

Having said all that, i do tip, i dont want people to hate me. + it looks good in front of girls.

Different cultures view tipping differently..

Being british.. this is something we find unfamiliar.. though I have recently noticed tipping being pushed by members of staff at a variety of venues.

I will only tip when I have recieved a service which excelled my expectations.

If someone has performed their dutys, not said much to me.. and seems a bit 'lifeless'. Then it doesnt want me to go that extra mile for them.

Now...

From my understanding of the american culture this has been adapted into a standard way of life. Apparently the wages are extremly low.. and tipping makes it more substantial. I have heard in some cases that a tip is automatically added to your bill...

The only thing i dont like about this... it erridcates your choice of tipping/not tipping..

Right.. i have wasted enough time! :D best get back to work!

They add the tip to your bill if you group is over a ceratin number of people, normally 6 or 8, but sometimes higher. Standard tip out there is about 10%, rising to 20% for good service. You can of course tip higher or lower, but these are the generally accepted %'s ( as far as my travels there have taught me at least )
