Small project I'm working on. (Largish post)

Post by Nixon »

Basically we have to design a very basic program. The topic is entirely up to us, it simply must include a movie, sound and have a navigation system - obviously theres a little bit more to it than that, but thats the very basics.

Anyhow I've decided to do mine on the PSP. The nature of the PSP allows me to cover these tasks incredibly easy.

I have decided to take the project on from a sellers perspective.

Basically I want my project to function as close to the PSP as possible, as I want to give the user a real feel for the thing before they buy it. I also want it to be easy to operate and understand

Basically I want it to look as it is, however there are a few questions I have, which hopefully you can answer.

First of all, all the information is displayed on the screen, my only concern is the size constraint I have set myself, its important its easy to read and able to fit everything on, as I'm not keen in adding a scrolling system, although I have something up my sleave.

When it runs, do you think the above size is adequete? I'm planning on making 1.5x size all together to ensure I fit everything

Secondly, the buttons along the bottom. The home/vol/select/start and such, basically I was considering removing this to add in buttons to detail the specifications and features of the PSP (Theres about 5 main selections in total). However, I have one little concern. It does take away from my original concept of keeping it like the PSP, and my other plan was to have those options on a 'main menu' type thing on the actual screen - which actually resembles the workings of the PSP - which option do you really think would be the best?

Thirdly, the x, o, square and triangle buttons. For the film and music I intend on using them to function the 'examples' I will have, in the form of play/pause/stop/exit. I had considered altering these buttons and change the graphic to resemble the play/pause and such, but again, this is one of the key identifiers of a Playstation so its not really an option. So I have three choices in my eyes.
- A key, basically in the introduction of the software let the user know what each button does (Note, if scrolling is necessary I plan on using the arrows)
- When the music/video page is loaded the buttons automatically change to play/pause and revert back too the x/o when not viewing these.
- And lastly, like above have the play/pause but only on mouse over when the music/movie is selected. This is my current choice.

Which one do you think is the best option?

And finally, the actual PSP itself. I plan on making all the buttons function, i.e when a buttons pushed you actually see the button being pushed down, when the program is run, the power light turns on etc. However I have considered two posibilities for how I want this program to be designed.
- Cartoony
- Real life representation

It does give me a bit of a dillema, both sides have there positives and negatives. Cartoony is far easier to edit and will allow me to add a lot more 'Zazz' too it, but at the same time, looks very unproffesional which I don't really like my work being, if it's done, it'll have to be done right which will be difficult.
And the real life representation, is harder for me to edit - I'm no photo shop whizz kid, so my concern is, it'll look tacky.

I have already designed a working but very simplistic version in powerpoint to acompany my write up, and its the initial version which has prompted me to consider these changes. The actual content of the project itself I have already covered and happy with, it's really just the extra touches I'm focused on.

Its a good idea, and the PSP screen, although "small", is v ery good for a handheld.

The only problem i see with your idea is the removing on the home/start/select/vol buttons. Of course once i tried it maybe it would be lovely, but these buttons are handy imho.

Still, the PSP is a good idea to try your project on.

Good luck.

Wait are you designing it, or actually writing it?
