Blue Screen of death

Post by Nixon »

I've been using the family computer the last month, and the whole time, there has been constant crashes. I haven't really tackled the problem (bad me especially being a computing student) until now.

Anyhow, I ran a full spyware/virus check with a variety of checkers, and now I've got rid of the huge amounts of spyware all appears to be clean, yet my Blue screen of death problem persists.

Initially I thought the problem was a RAM issue, as after I opened a few program's it would crash. Not only that but before the BSoD the process would reach 80-100% and switching between applications was murder when ever possible. However, after more frequent use, it's simply crashed upon even starting the computer.

So my next step was to check my drivers, however all appear to be update and np, so no known issue there.

I've read a little bit about common problems, and I know there can be software problems, this is where I think the problem may now lie.

This computer has Windows Service Pack 2 - I'm not overly familar with it, as I heard a lot of offputting advice around its initial release that made me hold back, but I wondered if it could directly affect some programs? I personally run Service Pack 1 on my computer.

Now, if the problem was software, the next task is finding out what, and how to fix it. Most the programs installed on my username are programs I use on my own computer problem free, so I think its unlikely its them. My sister and mum rarely use the computer, mainly just to email and surf, my dad mainly uses it to do day to day buisness, poker etc, so its reasonably important I get the problem fixed.

Anyhow, when the computer reboots, I get a Microsft has recovered message etc, so I go to the details to try and find out a little more, I find two files it would send with the report.

WERcb.dir00\Mini012306-03.dmp
WERcb.dir00\systemdata.xml

I've had a look around on the net to try and find out just what the hell these files really are and what they do, the second concerns me a little.

Anyhow, I know this is not a quick fix, and pretty hard to fix when you can't actually see it, but any helpful advice or guidance would be greatly apprciated.

Just of BSoD

- Check Disk Space
- If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable or check for updates
- Check BIOS updates
