late p15. p16 definetely had it's fun points but I thought runic dexers and 5x120 mages were overpowered no end. I can't say much about pre uo:r as I didn't play then, and the less said about aos the better. I can still think about the last night of p16, soloing with regs and blessed kilt/doublet and I think I had more fun than any one night in aos, maybe.
whether long range weapon or suicide bomber wicked mind is a weapon of mass destruction
*cough* Beta and the original Pre t2a Was loads of fun but then the game was also so very new then. Less kids playing more adults acting like kids and lots of americans who thought they could play.
ok it had its downside when you spent ages getting skill to 100 for it to be knocked down 0.1 when you went hunting, that was the worst.
Slaveing away on the blacksmith skill to gm and bang you lose it on a hunting trip but still so much fun

On this subject, can people name one specific thing that made UO great for them?
"PvP" isn't really an answer, elaborate on why PvP was so great in the context of the game.
For me i'd say it wasn't so much the PvP system of UO itself, more the feelings of victory/defeat, the development of rivalries, etc. UO felt 'real' in this regard, no other game ever has to me.
I think I liked the combined aspects of AoS and p16 becouse it really gave a reason and meaning to conflict in UO.

Aye, the grief play was just awesome. Also the group pvp still hasnt been beaten by any mmo's yet. Wow has fun group pvp but no way is it as skilled.
Something else that makes UO so special is the fact that it was the first MMO i played and pretty much got addicted to, making it that little bit more magical.
I miss reskilling too
