Ordered a new desktop and laptop yesterday.
Both with wireless NICs
What kind of router thingy thing do I need to buy in order to make them talk to one another, and also for the laptop to access interweb ?
Will make a wireless network, so do I connect my cable modem into the wireless router thingy or what ?

You won't need your cable router. Just buy any wireless adsl router. Or wait til the end of this month for the Buffalo A&G wireless router which will be the first dual band router released in the UK (I think) and has double the speed of existing wireless routers.

Although if you live in a terraced house you'll be providing internet for the whole street unless you turn down the broadcast intensity.

Fix your old pc, put a self configured linux firewall on it, hook it up with your wireless router, sorted.

They do some other ones if you're looking for something more specific. Was using old one for about a year and just got the one. Have to be careful not to kick it around tho.

(yes i do still read these forums)

if you are cable you dont need an adsl router, you can use a cheaper standard router.

Is this one any good ? -
Linksys WRT54GC-UK

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... 90-0726013

I'm still confused.
I now have a laptop and a desktop PC, both fitted with wireless n/w cards (Wwell the desktop seems to have some kind of USB wireless network adapter that sits on top of it).
I have my cable modem.

I want something that I can plug my cable modem into.
I dont want a cable from my PC or Laptop to the router/whatever or to the cable modem.

So, does that linksys thing I linked to serve the purpose ?
Is the price reasonable ?

I'm looking to invest in one soon as well, moving flats soon and neither me nor my mate has one.

I have a USB linksys wireless card and it was alright last year, although probably not the best thing for performance.

Ive heard wireless can be a cunt for online gaming.

Because im getting a flat, and my 2 flatmates both use laptops, and i have my 360, what im going to do is plug the broadband into my pc, so i have the stable connection, then set up a lan (if possible) and if not just set up a wireless connection they can pick up, along with my 360.

Unsure exactly what ill do, will read into it later.

It was for me last year, I don't really know if it was the conn or the wireless, but its a bit of a bitch for interference and losing conn.
