Tourism and some trade is dependent on air travel.
Rather than cutting back on airports and air travel, perhaps more should be done to encourage research into alternative fuels so that aircraft do not cause as much pollution.

Air travel is vital.

That was one of the major and most interesting parts of the article, the suggestion that we're not close to any alternative fuel for aviation(which we may be for many others), and anyway, current aircraft still have a lifespan of 20-60 years. So we wouldn't see any change in the fuel used even if one was available.

give it 50-100years when oil and shizzle runs out and see how fast they come up with other poweh sources they lack the necessary motivation atm to come up with anything

I've heard people speculate that the big oil companies are deliberately supressing alternative fuels research.
