Griefers

I think bullshit sums it up.

Quotes that stand out most to me are,
John Suler, a psychologist at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., has studied deviant behavior in online game communities and found that griefers fall into two basic camps.

"Some of them are kind of antisocial types, where their cause is to fight the authority figure," Suler said. "They take more pleasure in the grief they cause for the company that runs the game. That may stem back to difficult relations with parents and authority figures."

For the other basic type of griefer, it's personal.

"Sometimes it's just a matter of wanting to hurt other people, cause grief for them," Suler said. "It might be a form of displacement for people who have been victimized in other areas of their life. They cope by turning the passive into the active: 'Now I'm the person who victimizes other people.'"

Dealing with both types may start with mom's advice about bullies: Ignore them, and they'll go away. "They want attention," Suler said, "so if you ignore them, they may give up."
Now over the years I've met many Pk's, and while this maybe true for a small minority, the majority I've met are the types of people I'd happily be friends with irl.

If I take a look at I-C, I struggle to see where anyone fits into any of these categories. For a start, we are all over 18^^ Secondly, I've known a lot of them several years, I know enough about their rl backround to make a balanced judgement, more so than this physcolgist.

Articles like this always make me wonder about these so called experts :)

I got beaten up by members of the Musical Youth band when I was 12.
Obviously I am seeking revenge for this by murdering innocent people in online games.

I would say I PK/Be a gay in game due to not doing it irl, i get all my stress out that comes from Uni/Hockey season and put it into killing innocents.

Its also just a play style, sure in a sense I "Grief", but..So?

*shrugs*

If i was a tamer in UO all the time, i'd have alot of Grief to hand out irl, keke.

I also get hyper on Sugar.

I have no stress to put out in game. I find pking fun and hope the people I pk are players who enjoy the fear concept of pking and so on (I have only played just over a year and was initially told to avoid fel etc). It's all roleplay at the end of the day. I think this article, while slightly ott, is trying to talk about people who purposefully ruin other peoples game, like zim said on f4g forum. I agree on the idea that fucking around with people to an extreme could relate to being a nerd irl (and what comes with it).
