I was a bit confused about the whole tutorial startup part, dunno if I rushed in and ignored what it was telling me, but wasn't quite sure how to progress straight away. Levelling is pretty easy, and looks like it gets easier. Currently level 8 missions are semi-fun, but jury is still out on pvp til i can finish my char. I get the impression there won't be running around killing any old person, but arranged fights. I'd have preferred both but w/e.

Overall a good impression so far....

I started playing it a week ago, i never logged back to uo again. Pve is done like after a week then you have only to do a few raids to get elite skills/runes, but if you're skilled you can farm gold like mad and get all your runes in 1 day. I started with a Necro/Mesmer but the guild i asked to join needs a Ranger/Mesmer(shutdown char to disable enemy healers). My characters are Ganondorf Hyrule(necro/mesmer) and Link Mctriforce(the ranger/mesmer).

You don't need to level a character from scratch if you want to pvp with a different class you start at lvl20 with maxed armor level. You will need to unlock elite skills with a pve char though, and you can't get any runes on pvp chars. So if you want to try a new build out, you simply create it. If you like it then you will need to pve because runes can make the difference. Maxing out a character is done in 1 week.
The game has no fees but it sold like 1 milion copies and they will finance it with expansions, plus the costs of a completely instanced game are cheaper than that of a real mmrpg.
PvP is entirely based on skill and on group tactics, if you want to compete at a high level you will need a perfect group, which means you need to play with the same 7 people every day, balance the classes in the group, and have some real good teamwork. Voicechat is a must, really no time to type when you fight.
Leveling up a character is done by missions, there are main missions which follow the storyline, like in a single player game. If you want to solo you can most of the time, there are npcs you can group with which will fight for you, usually not as good as players, but better than noobs.
Graphics are awesome and the game runs on computers below minimum req, you don't need a new pc to play GW.
