@ Everyone - Regarding VISA's

Post by Angus »

So, ive been putting alot of thought into it. This year is my degree year, i.e. my third year of uni. I do a Business Managment and Marketing course, its good because it can basically get me into most sectors of employment, be it through low levels or higher up.

Anyway, Im looking at moving, I have friends, well, a friend(s) and his family moving back to Boston after a few years here in Scotland, and I think im tempted to go, I know its a big move, but, why not? The only thing is..a Visa.

Now, applying online and actually going to the US Embassy is completely different I know, but after applying online, well, I failed, due to..

1) Not having a job offer in the US
2) No direct family in the US

So what I basically need is, advice, its not a guarentee im going, but do you guys know any firms or such that offer hot Scottish boys jobz? keke.

Nah, i just wondered if you had any expierence with visa's or such like?

Hmm..

After looking around for jobs, all be it online. Ive came to the conclussion I should perhaps do a 4th year and get my honours, I think I could get a better job.

Theres some nice stuff out there, entry level marketing jobs based around marketing SPORTS STARZ (a la Jerry Maguire) but I dunno. I think if I was to move I'd want to go into a good job, not something I could do hear now with minimal effort.

Hmmz!

I suppose it really just depends on the job market there and what you'd be happy doing. I've no idea what's out there that you could get and would be appropriate.

Interested to see how you get on though, I'm considering the same thing, although I'm not deciding whether to do another year of a degree.

I'd have thought it's most likely worth you staying on, unless you happen to find something that would provide both a decent job now and good career prospects following that.

Why would you want to work in America?
There's plenty of oppertunity here I'm sure, and you won't get paid in monopoly money.

Why not?

I dunno, Ive just always been pro America. Went a few times on family holidays when I was younger and really liked it.

Ive put my CV out there, and emailed a few companies, Im not interested in doing any low level stuff, I want a job that will use my degree, there is stuff out there, some good marketing jobs, but as Benn said I could be better doing an extra year of Uni.

Ill get back to you on any jobs im offered and such, I posted my CV on some website recomended by the American Imagration website, so we'll see how that goes.

If you get a job oppurtunity, take it. Fuck the final year of Uni, seriously. Honours degree's mean dick all it seems, at least as far as my course goes. Experience is everything, so even if you were to get 1-2 years of experience, and then go back and get your Honours degree, I'd do that.

In my experience this is largely true.

Nothiong special making me say it's not a great idea, I just don't feel moving over there right now would be a good decision. The economy is atrocious and will be for a long time, you'd be far better off in Europe financially.

Some of my family had real grief with Amerika and visa's etc, i'll ask them about it. One is a teacher and despite having a permanent job over there got made to leave on at least one occaision..

He does live there as a TRUE AMERIKAN now so i'll ask.

Also Angus, try going through the Uni, you'll have a better chance going through them. See if you can get some kind of 1 year placement, with maybe the option of going for an honours year. My ex girlfriend worked over there for 4 months through Uni, so worth a shot imo.

One of my old work colleagues, had serious fucking grief getting a visa as well though. She setup a horse ranch, but like the first 3 years of it, she couldn't stay there. She was allowed to stay max of like 6 months, and had to come back here for 6 months, etc. I can't remember the details, but it was some kind of yo-yo thing.

Aye it seems a weird system.

As I said, ive no idea if i'd really want to go just yet, I like the thought of going. Just got a promotion at work for a while, acting manager while we get someone hired to fill the job full time, so that will keep me busy now im basically done uni till next year (next academic year).

Put my CV up yesterday, nothing heard back yet, but its early days I think. *shrug*

@ Calix - Cheers, even if I dont go now I think i'd be interested in going at a later day.

@ Nix - I never even thought of placement, ta.
